EQTV: andrew weatherall

When it comes to Soma, people think house, techno and electro – they certainly don’t expect the Glasgow label to start releasing rockabilly compilations. Well, not at the moment anyway. When Andrew Weatherall’s new mix album hits the shelves, that might change. Yes, the Lone Swordsman has finally committed one of his much talked-about rockabilly sets to CD, with the first instalment of Soma’s Sci-Fi Lo-Fi series (a Sci-Fi Hi-Fi spin-off). The six-decade-spanning collection of tracks, mixed entirely on vinyl, is a bit of an odd one, but like so much of Mr Weatherall’s music, it grows and grows on you, before, as he says himself, it’s eaten away at your soul. We tracked the man down at T In The Park to get the lowdown on the mix as well as some exclusive footage of him in action behind the decks. However, to prevent a riot, he stuck to playing techno – so if you want to know what Weatherall doing rockabilly sounds like, you’re going to have to buy Sci-Fi Lo-Fi…

Sci-Fi Lo-Fi is out on Soma on October 8.
