He’s just launched his own label, PH Recordings, with his new track, Pixy Stix, and he’s gearing up for a massive summer. Now catch Steve Porter in action with our MP3 mix, recorded live at his Porterhouse party in Miami…

Steve Porter is a busy man just now. Busier than he expected. He’s just launched PH Recordings, his own label that looks set to be one to watch over the coming months, and it’s taking up more time than he anticipated. That’s not stopped him from playing out as much as ever though – in fact, it seems to have given him the impetus to up his DJing game. His live set at this year’s Porterhouse party at the Miami Winter Music Conference is proof of that. So with the fourth WMC Porterhouse bash behind him, and with his new track, Pixy Stix, doing the business on PH, we caught up with Steve for a chat…

How’s being a label boss treating you? Has running PH been everything you thought it would be?
It's definitely more complicated than I thought it would be. It's almost like becoming a promoter – you're always trying to sell your product and give it more exposure. I've got a lot to learn, but it's nice to get the label moving finally.

How’s Pixy Stix been going down? Has it been the start to the label you were hoping for?
Pixy Stix has been a pretty solid release for us considering we're brand new. I think we'd probably have sold more copies if we had more gears in our machine cranking, but we'll get there. One thing about releasing music on a label is that any one record can call attention to your label and all of a sudden you're selling the whole back catalogue to somebody who just discovered the label for the first time.

What was the thinking behind the extensive remix package for that first release?
I just wanted to hold hands with as many of my music buds as possible for the first release. It wasn't the most economic way to do things, but it was heartfelt. I also wanted everybody to just do their thing, and I think the remix package came out pretty diverse because of that. Not every release will be like this, but you have to smash the champagne against the ship before she takes off.

What’s next up on the label?
Next up is Agent 001’s Juicy Fruit EP featuring three original Agent 001 tunes sure to whet the appetite, and fantastic remixes by Chris Micali and Emjae. After that it's an EP by up-and-coming producer Roger Lee, then an Emjae EP for release number four. I've got some new original Porter stuff coming soon as well, so we'll be keeping the pipeline juicy for sure.

How was the Miami launch?
Porterhouse Miami 4 was amazing, probably our best party yet. We cross-promoted PH Recordings at the Porterhouse gig and got the word out a bit more – it was nice to have the party as a vehicle for that. Next year we're hoping to have the label standing on its own two feet and ramp up the party even more.

Tell us a bit about the mix you’ve given us.
That's a live mix from Porterhouse Miami this year – it was done for Sirius Satellite Radio and they recorded the crowd ambience as well. One of the things with me is that I'm always changing as a DJ – I guess I can't stay in one spot for too long, but it's fun to evolve.
