MP3 MIX: atomic hooligan

With their new single Papercuts fresh on the shelves, EQ favourites Matt Welch and Terry Ryan – aka Atomic Hooligan – deliver an exclusive MP3 mix, a mashed-up taster of their forthcoming Decks, Mics and Blah Blah Blah tour. We catch up with Terry to find out more…

Tell us a bit about the mix you’ve done for us. Is this pretty close the Hooligans’ DJ sound at the moment?
Yeah, it’s from our new DJ show Decks, Mics and Blah Blah Blah. It’s myself, and MCing from Genesis Elijah, who appears on our new album, Sex, Drugs and Blah Blah Blah. We’ve just mashed up a lot of our new material and remixes with some dancefloor classics. It’s the kind of set you’ll be hearing us play now if you come see us at a club. I’m really happy with it.

How much has the Hooligans’ sound changed between the last album and the upcoming one?
It’s hard to say as we’re on top of it all the time. It’s like watching a kid grow – you notice more when you’re away from them for a while. So because we work at our sound every day it’s hard to say. I think it’s become more refined, and, in some ways, more beautiful. We’re still slinging low bottom end and a lot of dirt, but if anything we’ve refined it. If you liked the last album, you’ll love this one.

What can we expect from the new album?
Songs. Really well-constructed and executed songs that are firmly rooted in breaks. You can also expect lots of live sounds in the music, like live horns and live strings. We’re very excited about it. Plus we have two new vocalists working with us for the album and live show. Like I mentioned before, there’s Genesis Elijah on one track, and then there’s Elmo Jones from The Furies on three tracks. And we have Justine back from the last album, and American hip hop legend Afu Rah.

How’s the new single going down? We’ve heard good things…
Same with all our stuff really, either they love it or they hate it. There’s no in-between. It’s a different sound, so I think people were surprised, but mostly people love it.

Papercuts/Weed is out now on Botchit & Scarper. The album Sex, Drugs and Blah Blah Blah follows in February. Watch out for the Hooligans' live show Decks, Mics And Blah Blah Blah. Visit www.myspace.com/atomichooligan
