You can always trust Botchit & Scarper to come up with some intresting sounds, and their new signing, Flore, looks set to provide the label with plenty of them. Proof of this comes in the shape of her debut release for the Botchit crew, a double A-side that sees Flore teaming up with lesbian vocalists and a UK hip hop luminary.
Flore’s musical career started with her building up a healthy following within French breakbeat circles. Since then, she’s recently been winning plaudits from all the big players thanks to her remixes and solo releases on imprints such as Mofo, Ibreaks and her original home from home Labrok. Now she’s gearing up to drop her debut album, Raw – set for release in October this year – but first comes We Rewind/The Test.
We Rewind features the vocal talents of none other than Rodney P, a man widely regarded as the godfather of British hip hop. He’s worked with Roots Manuva, Skinnyman, Black Twang, The Next Man, Omar, Brand New Heavies, The Dub Pistols, MJ Cole, Roni Size, The Stanton Warriors, Timo Maas, Bjork and Nitin Sawney and featured on Channel 4’s Dub Plate Drama series. Here he takes a break from working with Dub Pistols on their new LP on Rob Da Bank’s Sunday Best label to deliver an infectious vocal over Flore’s wobbling bassline and 8bit bleeps.
On the flip, is The Test, teaming vocals from Shunda K – one half of Yo! Majesty, Florida’s most potty-mouthed lesbian hip-hop duo – with some pounding dancehall beats. And you’ll be hearing more from Shunda when Flore releases Raw later this year. In the meantime, check out this rather tasty little mix.
